Hi Aaron,

Relocate to China, preferably in the Shang Hai region, but more work will be
around the Dong Guan region.

Manage the quality control out of the many commercial fly tying shops.

Sad isn't it. I think this is why unless you have a lodge / B&B in a prime
fishing locale, it is really tough to make a living at it. Since flies are
part of the entire experience...

Trust me, if I could make a living at it, I would too. I do have a plan to
go after newbie fly fisherman who if I educate them on how much fly tying
really costs (if you believe you tie to save money from buying - you are
only fishing with 5 patterns). Make up a kit with some unique flies
(possibly patent-able features - which would probably never hold up in
court). The fly has to be quick and easy to tie (since you will not make
any money on your labor) and effective. Shoot, kill or mame the animals
that produce the materials for these flies and buy in extreme bulk - this is
where you would make money (or break even). Get the packaging from China
along with the hooks.

Test market, set up a consignment program at Cumberland farms and other
stores. If successful, you will soon ship the entire business to China
unless you like tying tons of the same fly.

This is why I have just picked up tying Atlantic Salmon flies (not full
dress yet) as I get so depressed thinking about trying to recoup my
investment. Tying ATS is truly like art - it is really different than
trout flies. Quite satisfying. Even though there is no hatch to match -
just the bar that accomplished fly tiers have set for you. This is the
frustrating part...lol..

It also seems that the Northeast is overrun with fantastic tiers that I
would never want to go up against vice to vice.

My thoughts.

Chris.

Subject: [VFB] Working as a fly tyer

Hello,
I have a question, and I am sure that it is one that has been asked
by many people on this site...how does one go about finding a fly tying job?
I am sure that many places purchase from a distributer who gets their flies
from overseas locations, but there are probably places that look to purchase
domestically as well.
