I probably give away 100 flies a year, more or less. This year i'm doing seven shows, (the most ever in one year for me), plus tying at different things where we, (CFTG) teach kids, so........it's easy to go thru 100. I do it because i could never use them all myself, and because people like it. I know i do, when someone gives me a fly. And i probably get 100 flies a year back too, because i watch more tyers tye every year, than anyone i know. Just at the CFFC&M alone, that's seven months of Sats., (first one after opening day, to the last one in Oct.) right there, where we spend the afternoons with the "special guest tyer" every week. So what goes around, comes around. And like Ginger said, you can't expect anyone who spent hours on a fly, to go around giving them away. I wish all of you could come and see my gallery sometime........"Killer" fly collection. later, mark

Most tyers I have seen give their flies away, but some more famous ones do not.
And some do, Gary Borger gave me 2 of his flies at the New Jersey show, Bob Linquist, none.
I come out and ask some that do not offer and sometimes trade for their flies too.
The complicated patterns that take a lot of time (sculpted deer hair, weaving, hand painted poppers, classic salmon flies)
are not given away and I do not blame these people, they are works of art.
I love to give my flies away to genuinely interested spectators.

I've seen several comments similar to the one below over the years on the list and it has me wondering...

Is it not a common practice to give away the flies you tie at a show? I always give away the flies I tie at shows. Usually to the person that asked me about something in particular about the pattern or to the person that is "front & center" at my table.

What about the rest of you? Do you give yours away? Do others that you have observed give their away?
