OK Bob, i have a bunch of that stuff. So far i've done it the same way i
would any feather i would use as a wet fly hackle, throat, or collar. And
that is to just pull down the fibers i wanted to wrap, away from the center
fibers and partially fold it, (the hackle fibers), or at least get them
going in the right direction before i tye it in. Then just leave enough
room, (where it's tyed in) to get that first wrap going (first half a turn)
before any fibers actually begin to flar out. So, very often i do trim,
(with very fine sissors), the first say, five to ten fibers off the left
side of the feather BEFORE tying it in. Left side being with the feather
(tips) facing away from me, or with the stem in my hand, and only the first
few fibers (5 to 10) trimmed up at the tip, not down at the stem of course.
Also i use hackle pliers when wraping, unless there's enough stem to work
with to where i don't need them. And when using them, i always use the Radio
Shack electrical clip type. Other than that i make use of my bodkin to keep
stray fibers going in the right direction. If, at anytime i see things
getting weird, i will switch hands and hold the tension on the hackle with
my left hand, and use the bodkin with my right to get them fibers back where
i want them to be. I'm very ambidexterous, and that really helps. Basically
i tye right handed but i naturally use sissors left handed. This is kind of
strange or whatever, but i eat, write, paint, etc. academic things, left
handed. But, i throw, kick, shot, fight, etc. physical things, right handed.
I can hit baseballs both ways, do basketball layups off the correct foot
either way. I play ping pong left and tennis right. I play guitar right
handed. Funny, but that's me. Like when i pick out a body, i use the tool
left handed, but for that "keeping the fibers going where i want trick" i
use my right hand rather than have to reach over myself while still trying
to hold the tension on the hackle with my right hand. In other words i can
reach the back side of the fly easier with my right hand then with my left,
if i'm also holding tension. Hope that makes some kind of sense. mark

Whiting's Spey Capes. They look like a chicken with hair instead of
feathers!
