Depends on the fly and the fish. If it's a new fly and not an old standby, I would give the fish a break, and make sure I had that fly as a pattern to copy! (has happened to me a number of times)

If the fish are five pounders and I've felt deprived the previous days of the fishing trip, I would do what Neville suggested: put on a heavier tippet, check the drag, and just have fun until the inevitable happens. (Now that situation doesn't happen every day *g*)

Usually, I can find something close enough in the flybox to the 'hot fly' to ride out the storm. (trout hitting like crazy aren't usually too picky). Often that substitute fly is a real bonus find, as it clues me as to what the two patterns have in common that is attracting the fish. That knowledge is actually more valuable than having a 'hot' fly.

The kind of weather we're having today, you'd love if you were a fish... wet, wet, wet. All the steelhead rivers and streams are chocolate milk today.

"When you're down to your last fly and the trout are hitting like crazy,
what do you do?"

Think about it? What would you do? I'll tell you what'd I'd do
come tomorrow.
