I think everyone spells it "tyer" so their is no
confusion with a tier of shelving.

However, the American Heritage Dictionary says
    tier2 
    SYLLABICATION:    ti�er
    NOUN:    One that ties: a tier of knots.

Hmmmmm.  Why did they not say one WHO ties?????
