The former editor, Art Scheck, is adamant about spelling the word tier.

Now if you want to write for mags, best you follow the Outdoor Style
Manual of the OWAA. "Fly-tier: one who ties artificial flies. Not fly
tyer."
I remember a coversation about this with the folks at Fly Tyer mag. They
said they spelled it incorrectly for graphic reasons on the cover. I
believe, but stand to be corrected, that any interior reference is "fly
tier."
