I keep a flat rorund magnet on almost all the pedastals of my different vises. Just for a place to store the hooks i'll be using at any one sitting. Then i have one of those Scherer Designs Fly n' Hook magnatized dealie bobbers, by TACH-IT, on my desk too. And that holds quite a few hooks in place also. Gotta have a coffee grinder there for blending dubbings. Gotta have music in the room of course. I have two of those grey rubber tool holders, both stuffed full with tools of everykind you can thing of. And all kinds of different head cements, nail polishes, and lacquers. Indelable ink pens for dying feathers. Got two clocks in the room, LOL. All my 400 fly fishing/tying books are in there except for the ones out in the living room. Got a lot of those plastic stack container things. The ones that screw into themselves and stack up. All different sizes. Great for storing already groomed feathers for soft hackles of various sizes and beads. I keep two different c-clamp vises (one on each side) attached to the sides of the table to hold flies while drying, and while waiting for another coat of whatever. Got a couple of those carousels things that hold Krystal Flash and the like. I think they hold 16 different colors in each, VERY handy. Of course you've GOT to have an Ott Light. Got my Larva Lace dispenser. And i guess other than that, it's mostly containers of all different kids, shapes, sizes, and materials. My wife gets a lot of real nice things from Japan, so i keep a lot of materials in really nice containers from Japan. I also use metal cookie containers a lot. And of course for hackle, pheasent capes, and things that can get infested, i keep them all in airtight plastic container tubes. All with Enoz Moth Krystals/Nuggets in them. Well whoever ask, hope that helps. mark.........

Cow magnets. Haven't thought about them for fly tying. They are some of the best magnets.

From someone that has given cows magnets:) Sounds weird but they work.

Personally, the best gadget is one from my days on the farm - 40 years ago - a Cow Magnet!

Cows occasionally get "hardware disease" - meaning they manage to ingest pieces of metal or wire which end up making a mess of their digestive tract - except that dairy farmers can give the cow a permanent pill, a magnet about 3" long and 1/2" in diameter, which ends up in one of the stomach compartments, trapping the offending metal before it progresses further through the digestive system (and making surgical removal easier if necessary).

I would even guess that the good Dr. Whittle has one at his desk - these cow magnets will not only pull dropped hooks out of carpet, or find size 24 hooks if you spill a box - they are also good for magnetizing a bodkin or scissors tip.

Can be purchased at most co-ops and farm supply stores - at least in dairy areas.

I am wondering if you could have any gadget or tool at your bench besides the essentials, bobbins etc.. What would it be? [snip]
