Bill,

Standard Uni-thread is a 'bonded' thread, and perhaps the worst 
possible choice for the split-thread technique. Uni does market a non-
bonded thread, but I have yet to see it appear in the flyshops.

Danville Flymaster splits very easily, good choice. Marc Petitjean 
also markets a thread hmself which works very well.

On the lining up multiple CDC feathers (or any other feathers) for 
the Magic Tool label it is often a case of selecting a good match of 
table width and stem length. Too wide a table and it will be hard to 
have enough stem left to properly grasp both ends to push them into 
the table groove.

You may also want to experiment with using a short section of thread 
or fine wire to push the feather stems into the groove. Once they are 
seated the thread or wire is simply pulled off to the side for 
removal.
