I still have a stick of Overton's Wonder Wax but a good and relatively cheap alternative is wax used for waxing cross country skis. Cross country ski wax comes in different hardnesses and one would need the softer (more sticky) variety.

hmm... why would cross country folks want to stick to the snow? downhiller's ski wax is very hard and slick....
