I have done this with Yarn, Crochet thread and Floss. A tier at a show some years ago showed it to me.
It really makes nice extended bodies. The latest material I have used is Gudebrod EZ dub. It makes real nice extended body mayflies.
Tie in the EZ Dub, furl the tail as Don posted, tie off, wrap the EZ dub for the body Tie off. Add a wing and hackle.
