And this (sure sounds like a synthetic to me):
How to Make Nylon
What was the first synthetic polymer fiber ever synthesized by man? If you did not say Nylon, you are not paying attention. That's right, Nylon was invented in 1938 by E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company . And the world has never been the same.
And who was the primary researcher? Carruthers. What does the word nylon stand for? It was originally called no-run, for the idea was that fabrics made from it would not run. In the PR process this was reversed to nuron, which eventually became nylon, before the stuff hit the market...
However, nylon was definitely not the first synthetic polymer, not even if you discount rayon (which is basically dissolved and re-spun cellulose).

<x-tad-bigger>Polymers have been with us since the beginning of time. Natural polymers include such things as tar and shellac, tortoise shell and horns, as well as tree saps that produce amber and latex. These polymers were processed with heat and pressure into useful articles like hair ornaments and jewelry. Natural polymers began to be chemically modified during the 1800s to produce many materials. The most famous of these were vulcanized rubber, gun cotton, and celluloid. </x-tad-bigger><x-tad-bigger>The first synthetic polymer produced was Bakelite in 1909</x-tad-bigger><x-tad-bigger> and was soon followed by the first semi- synthetic fiber, rayon, which was developed in 1911.
[Unquote]
Bakelite is a crosslinked phenolic resin, filled with an inorganic (chalk) or organic (wood dust) filler. Invented by Belgian inventor and chemist Hendrik Baekeland.
