Henk already nailed this one....but neither nylon nor cotton is protein based. Some of the dyes that work with materials such as wool, fur, and feathers will also work on nylons due to the amide type linkage present in both proteins and nylons. What the first synthetic fiber available might be spltting hairs...Rayon was available prior to nylon, but was essentially from dissolving wood and wood products using sodium hydrixe and then using spinerette to make fibers. Nylon was the first matterial synthesized from a non-natural source.

Hi VFB,
Another question pertaining to the research I am doing. I got a
message back from a manufacturer who said that like cotton, nylon was
also PROTEIN based. Really? I always thought nylon was a synthetic.
How is nylon made?
The answer is interesting because it means that dyes meant for protein
based materials like cotton, fur and feathers will also work well on
nylon.
Something to do during these quiet Sowbugger times on VFB...
