I have used laytex from rubber gloves, and you can also buy latex material in squares 
( approx.  2"x2" ) at some fly shops, and at craft stores.  I haven't tried them with 
pearlescent mylar, but I am now curious how that might look under a stretched laytex 
strip up the back of the scud......

There's a material called "Scud Back", sort of a stretchy plastic strip that would 
work.  It comes in several widths and colors, including clear.  If all else fails, you 
can always just cut a strip from a Zip-Lock baggie for the shell back.  That works 
fine.
