Jimi: When my Dad would make his own sanding belts,a he would cut both ends on a matching 45 degree angle, and use a fabric of some kind as a backing to overlap the joint by at least 6 inches. I do not know what kind of adhesive he used, but the joint would last as long as the belt. Good luck.
Larry J >>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 04/02/04 06:00AM >>> Folks, I am have a difficult time finding any 1"X48" sanding belts. I need some fairly fast, (like yesterday), and had an idea. I can get emery paper in rolls 1" wide in all sorts of grits. I thought I could just make a couple here in the shop. Well, test #1 looked good, used contact cement to put it together and it fit the sander like a glove. Turned it on and it worked great, for about a minute. Boy, what a surprise when it came from together apart, stung a little to. So, now I have to re-think this. It parted right at the joint of the overlap. Contact cement does not seem to be the answer. Any one know what type of glue is used in this application? Also, is there some sort of backing that should be glued to the joint? If I can make my own belts for this it would save me time as well as $$ not to mention giving me a wide assortment of grits, ( let us not start debating the cooked kind again please). Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I was supposed to have this done and out of here this afternoon. Please repond off list to [EMAIL PROTECTED] It's for a reel seat so it is related to fly fishing. Jimi
