Maybe the greats of the vfb will have more input, but here goes mine.

Having learned to tie with sewing threads, then moving up to tying threads
that had to be waxed by hand (thanks for reminding me about that chunk of
wax that lived in my tackle box, Tony), breaking off a 2' piece to tie a fly
with by hand, my vote for favorite bobbin is ALL of them!

I have a lot of different bobbins that I've used since my first one, which I
still have. As I use them, I figure out what they're best for and stay with
that. I have some large-bore un-flared bobbins that cut the thread and were
stored for a while. With the advent of spooled tying wires, these came back
into service and are perfect for this. I have magnum bobbins for heavy
lines and adjustable tension bobbins for really heavy lines. I have midge
bobbins perfect for tiny size tying threads. I have home-made bobbins for
my bulk spools. My general tying bobbins are just average bead-end
flared-metal tube style- nothing fancy, but still a God-send. I don't see a
whole lot of difference between ceramic tubes and good metal flared-end
tubes.

I like a bobbin to fit in my hand and respond to palm pressure for tension.
Tube extension is not a factor for me as the adjustable tube bobbins I have
stay pretty much in the same position as the others.

One of these days I'll try a retractable bobbin to see if I like that. But
my vote for best bobbin still has to be all of them.
