Hi everyone,
Got out yesterday VERY late after a long day in the lab (early this morning?), to
fish a local stream (more like a river if you ask me). After a few bluegills/ bream,
I switched from my IBCCS (maroon parachute, dk dun cdc wing, cream hackle, cdl tail)
in size 16 to a size 4 dark Stone Nymph, just for the heck of it (no, I didn't think
I'd catch anything, but I wanted to see how it sank, honestly). First cast, and WHAM!
one of the hardest strikes of my life! Needless to say, I didn't have to set that
hook - the Northern pike did that for me! After almost a half hour of fighting and
acrobatics (that thing was air-bourne over half of the time, while my stomach was
doing summersaults besides!) I C&R'd a approxamitely 20 inch Northern pike! No, not a
musky, I know those when I see them, and I was hoping it was one... This was a HUGE
northern pike! Pictures to follow when developed - they better come through, as my
fiance dropped the camera into the stream just a few minutes before, and it's the 35mm
type, not one of these waterproof digital jobs. I'm a die-hard C&R person, so didn't
take him home for further pictures. Anyhow, I wanted to know if anyone had good fly
patterns for Northern Pike, and also, I'm curious why they're called *Northern*
Pike... are there Southern ones?
Take care everyone,
one very tired but thrilled Pete
