I have lived in alaska for several years during the 80's and since 98 I have been going annually. Some recommendations. Book a flight early!!!In Jan. if you shop around You can find flights to anch. between 300 and 700 dollars. My flight this year was 340 bucks round trip. My dad waited until april and he paid 500 bucks .I have paid as low as 275 buckswith 2 layovers.
There are several options once you reserve your flight .Where to go? 3 of us are going this year and we split the cost on a pick up camper.1000 bucks a piece for 3 weeks. Again shop early! We will be doing the road system I am very intimate with the road system and know alot of secret spots that are empty of anglers.
Buy a book or books get a map Ak Gazzetere, Highway angler.several others to chose from. another option is to search the net.You will be amazed at some do it your self float trips that our out there .Example i found a outfit that will fly you in to bristol bay area, supply the raft give some tips for 1000 bucks a head for aweek. there is a tremendous amount to do in this beuatiful land.
You will need to know what you want to fish for .the 3 main salmon that people target our kings (may-mid july) (sockeye june - july)silvers my favorite mid aug- oct. steel head fishng is better in the fall like oct.Kodiak island is a great place to utilize the roads and very litle angling pressure good for silvers and sockeye and steel head. Bristol bay is top notch for trophy rainbows.I can go on and on. any more questions i can lead you down some paths to get you into the Great Land
