I worked for Tricon (the holding company for KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell)
for just over five years, here in South Africa. I handled the planning and
placement of stores in the Southern African region.

As part of the head office training we went through an extensive training
programme in each of the brands, from store management and food preparation
all the way to supply chain management (that included supplier
inspections),. As part of the training, we were exposed to all of the
regulations placed on the suppliers.

I cannot possibly believe that it would take an organisation (misguided or
otherwise) like PETA to expose unacceptable behaviour within any of the
Tricon suppliers, that they didn't pick up themselves. I can assure you that
the quality assurance methodology applied by the brand/s would pick up the
trauma and product degradation as suggested by the video material. At the
very least.

My international exposure in Europe, Singapore and in the United States
enhances my assertion that the international standards as enforced by Tricon
are done so consistently and globally, as becomes a globally represented
stable of brands in the fast food industry.

Many campaigns of this ilk have been launched against brands, the likes of
McDonalds, Wendys, Burger King, and a brand that you would have personal
experience with, the north European, Nordsee. (Not that you wouldn't have
experience with the US brands.)

To get another view on PETA, have a look at their website, read Trout and
Salmon for a further opinion. Do you know that one of their objectives is to
stop all fishing? Our type as well?

This is absolute, unadulterated and comprehensive rubbish!

This is my view, but I am sure that you will be able to get the other side
of the story on the Tricon website www.yum.com.

Sorry for the rant guys. No it's not fishing or tying related, but this kind
of industrial terrorism cannot be tolerated, well not by me in any case.

Bye for now
David

P.S. This is my only posting on the matter. I'll be happy to engage further
off-list with anybody so inclined.

I saw some horrifying video clips today. I trust it looks better at Whiting
and Conranch than it does at KFC.

>From PETA.org:
"On July 20, 2004, PETA released the results of an undercover investigation
into a KFC chicken slaughterhouse in Moorefield, W.Va., where workers were
caught on video stomping birds, kicking them, and slamming them against
floors and walls. Workers ripped the animals' beaks off, twisted their heads
off, spat tobacco into their eyes and mouths, spray-painted their faces, and
tied their legs together for "laughs."
The investigation was conducted at this location because it was the site of
a KFC "Supplier of the Year" award ceremony, and PETA wanted to see the
"best" that a KFC supplier had to offer. This slaughterhouse is run by
Pilgrim's Pride, the second-largest chicken company in the U.S., after Tyson
Foods."
