For those of you that don't have peccary hair you can tie Ring neck pheasant tail fibers in a knot with a small crochet hook very easily.  They come dyed black also for black stones.   If you do want to soften quills try a combination of warm water and Woolite.  See if that works.

You don't know how much I appreciate you sending me some of that Peccary Hair to use for legs and antennae on these Stone Flys...  I was getting so frustrated using small hackle stems because the darn things kept breaking when I tried to bend the legs into shape, even after soaking them in hot water, but this peccary hair works fantastic...  It's taking me close to 3 hours to tye each one, including the preparations for each fly, but it's well worth it...  Again, thank you very much... I owe you one...  (VBG)...
