While I do not tie commercially, I do tie for charity and have gotten into the
habit of tying a hundred flies before changing to a different pattern. It's
actually pretty amazing how you can continue making discoveries as the numbers
climb.
When tying for friends or myself it'll usually be a few dozen, not a hundred.
I find that I really don't get into the groove on a pattern until about the
tenth fly, so I'll often tie at least two dozen and end up stripping hooks of
the first several flies because they look kinda sloppy after the pattern
becomes familiar.
It's really helpful to take notes too. You keep making discoveries about
better or preferable ways to handle material in a pattern, and I can vouch for
the fact if I don't write down the bright ideas they'll evaporate after a few
months. The funny thing is, they don't seem like bright ideas at the time, so
it's tempting to not take notes, but when I look back at notes from a pattern
tied a year ago, most of the helpful insights have been forgotten.
When experimenting with inventions, it's good to hold onto examples of each
improvement. You can learn a lot when studying the false starts at a later
time.
Whatever your preference, I can assure you that you'll learn lots when tying
larger numbers of the same pattern, but only if you continue paying attention.
Do what's most fun and most satisfying.
