I'm not sure I remember right but I think Rotorua is the area that has a lot
of hot springs, geysers so to speak.   Just a thought ....   (and their
might be someone with a better suggestion)  look into taking a small puddle
jumper down to the south island for a few days and there are some excellent
trout streams near Queenstown.    It didn't cost an arm and a leg to do this
and I cancelled all the rest of my plans and ended up staying there.
The other place you may look that is closer to Rotorua is Mount Cook they
had some nice streams there. We stayed in Wanaka which was an interesting
town.  Remember though that it is Winter there and will be cold.   I was
there in September and it was still very cold for trout fishing.
