Mike,

I fish in New Zealand every year. (if you want to know anything more.. contact me direct..)

Items to note:

1. Fishing season does not open on most streams until October (there are the odd one or two open in various regions - but not many

2. September is a very good time of year to fish near Rotorua and Taupo.
I can reccommend wet lining and upstream nymphing for winter run rainbows in the Tongariro. Very similar to what you may know as steelheading - Average size this year is about 5 lbs for the rainbows. Tongariro fished best after or during rain when it colours up. You need a special licence to fish the Tongariro and Taupo region but it is not expensive for the weekend.

Tongariro Fishing
Equipment: Suggest a good 9 foot, 8 or 9 weight rod. Neoprrene chest waders (you can hire them from most shops though)

Up Stream Fishing :
A WFF - use two flies very heavy nymph + glo-bug tied to the bend (or small PTNs etc if water clear), 9 - 12 foot level leader. Large Floating indicator at the join between fly line and tippet.

Down and Across - Super fast sinker or shooting head - use Large wet flies in sizes 4 - 6 - Olive, Brown,Black Wolly Bs, Red Setters

River Mouth Fishing - Early Morining and Evening, and Night. This works in all the river mouths for Rotorua and Taupo. Just be concious of wind direction. In Taupo the drop offs are deep and sudden so be really careful. Where the streams flow in to the lake, you will generally see a few anglers, just wade out find a gap or join the end of the line
Floating line, 6 - 9 foot leaders , use large 4 - 6 wet flies - check in with the stores to find out what is working - I reccommend Woolly Buggers for day and night, Red Setters Scotch Poacher for first and last light, Big Wooly Biggers, Craigs Nighttime, Doll flies, Marabut flies, Squids for after dark - dont forget a head lamp....

When you buy your licences ask for some brochures - usually they have some to show you rivers and lake access points.

Have Fun - I am envious

All;

I am reposting this because I have not seen the first message I posted.
I only get back about half of the messages I post so I never know if
people are seeing what I write. If the previous post did show up I
apologize.

I am going to be in New Zealand for the first week or so of September
and would like to get some trout fishing in. Does anybody here have any
information on fishing hew Zealand? I will be close to the Taupo and
Rotorua regions of the North Island. Has anyone fished this region? Or
have any ideas about guides and areas to fish etc?

Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Mike M
