Jimmy,

Good article, but I found it interesting that they stated that hooking fish
weakens them, and then use as an example a live goliath grouper (alias
jewfish) with 20 hooks still in its mouth. Wrong example to prove a point,
I think. I would use that as an example that a fish can be hooked 20 times
and still live. Am I missing the point?

I accept that 'sport' fishing does put pressure on fisheries, but as stated,
well-managed high-pressure fisheries are doing well. Valuable fisheries and
fishermen with money are a symbiotic relationship.

I believe bottom-dragging commercial foreign trawlers with sophisticated
instruments to avoid capture work the off-limits inshore bays during the
nights. This is going on in Mexican waters on a regular basis, so why not
here? The dead discarded by-catch of these fleets is millions of tons of
fish and various bottom creatures, especially the chain-dragging shrimp
trawlers.

Sport-fishers don't leave a wake of death and destruction like a commercial
shrimper does, unless JimmyD drags his feet in the water behind the boat.

I'd like to get Ginger's professional take on this article, since it's in
her field and in her neck of the woods.
Ginger?

DonO

BTW, one must cut and paste both lines to insert in the url line, or it
doesn't work. Mine only highlights the 1st line, and it takes both.
