I bought some nylon rope at a hardware store while I was visiting family in Nashville last winter. I had lost a strap to my cartop carrier. After I drove 11 hours, I untied the carrier and noticed some lovely, sparkly stuff that came from the rope end flapping and unraveling in the breeze.
It had a cottony-looking core with the nice sparkly stuff on the outside. I looked at it under my kid's microscope, and it appeared to be trilobal, shaped like a 3-bladed prop or a 3-legged starfish. It might not satisfy the antron purists (and I'm certainly no fiber analyst), but it works really well in flies.
