Hi Gang,
Liz picked me up at the Spokane bus Station about
11 AM today. I see Jimmy D. laid the job of reporting about the fishing on my
shoulders.
Jimmy D and Dick policed me up at the Raton NM
bus station early on the morning of 09/23. We slipped down to Santa Fe and
picked up another of our ff group at the little local airport. The four of us
beat feet to Philmont Boy Scout Ranch, N.M. just outside Cimarron. This is an
operative Ranch of over 215 acres in size. Having Jimmy D as our main camp host,
he chose the Zastro camp for our 12 fishing buddies. (without doubt the
best fly fishing creek on the Ranch) We had our own cook who provided us with
outstanding meals and no one went hungry.
After getting settled in Jimmy D gave me the 25
cents tour down to the creek. It did not look like much of a trout water. Mostly
12 to 18 inches in depth and between 4 and 10 feet in width. A rapidly moving
mountain kind of stream that I am used to fishing here at home. I went back to
our cabin and picked up my 6' 1" 4 pc, 3 wt and tied on a California mosquito,
black.
Went back down in my street shoes and flipped my
fly of choice into a small pool upstream. First cast and I had on an 8 inch bow!
Nice fight and shortly was in my hand and released. Enough fishing for one day
because I had been informed we were to drive back into camp for a Buffalo Steak
cookout. The meal was outstanding as was all of the food prepared for us during
our stay by our own cook. Charlie is the head of security for the Ranch and did
put out a top quality fare the entire time.
