Allergies to bee stings are very common, the itching and bump normally
associated with a bee sting is in essence an allergic reaction.  The
reaction you are speaking of is a particularly nasty response called
anaphylactic shock.  Anaphylactic shock occurs not on the first exposure to
the causative agent but the second.  It is not uncommon for someone who has
been stung many times to "suddenly" become allergic.
