BTW: Why did Sawyer choose Chadwickas 477? After a lot of test? Or because it was simple in his wife's Sewing box? Maybe she tied the first pattern?
Isn't it mostly a question of availability why we choose a specific material?

Take an old pattern. It was the Sawyers Killer Bug that started all this after all.
Its a brilliant pattern as all simple ties usually are. Chadwicks 477 wool and copper wire. Now 477 isnt made any longer and ALL the subs I have seen are nowhere near the same colours that are in the original material. Does that make the flies that people tie now with substitute materials a different fly? Same style of pattern but different eh ? They still work
Other examples: Spey flies. They were talked about on the list not long ago. Would a TRUE Spey pattern work like the "Spey" patterns used on salmon in the USA? Or does it need a Pink Glo Spey ? Same pattern or is it in the style of the originals?
The most messed with pattern could also fall in the same category. The Pheasant tail nymph. How many variations do you know on this theme. Would the original pattern still work where you fish the Gold head versions?
If you change the hook type on a flie and it works better does it become a different pattern.
Is your Madam X with a red butt a different fly Don? Or a variation on the original? And as such a different fly with a different name.
Like you I have fished dries where the trout dont want to know. Make the fly sink as happens when retreiving to re-cast and wham fish on ! That is I suppose presentation.
But what about variations of a fly? Should they be called the same name or something different? Could you come up with enough names??? Maybe the Europea style sedges are the best example. They are all called Europea but then numbered........
