This is stepping in on a favourite subject of mine... "Fly-tying material or not". Every so often, I go out on a bike trip downtown, "raiding" all the stores I pass. I'm walking around, scanning through the shelfs and eventually someone always comes with the standard question: "Can I help you with something?". Instant answer: "Nah, I'm just looking for fly-tying materials."... and the poor employee always gets the same question mark painted in his forehead. Confused he says: "Hmm... I don't know if we carry that kind of stuff here." That's the point I think: "You wanna bet?"... and then the fun starts. "There has to be SOMETHING!!!"
... and I always win. There always IS something you can use. Beads, wires, brushes, tinsels, braids etc etc. Last time I challenged myself and went into a car garage. Came out with my pockets full of thin packing foam that they had thrown. That foam are coming as wings on my Foam Swap fly. It's a sport of its own. Go out... look at everything there is... and think. Bob has a point in what he says... but I wouldn't say there is a big risk to put the fly shops out of business. Of the huge amount of fly-tying material there is today, only a very small percent can be substituted on these hunts. You can usually find them in lots of different colors, pink, yellow, orange, white, green, whatever. Buy them all, lol. Fly shops will just rip you off in comparison price wise. All your going to do is scrunch up the tip of the feather anyway, and tye it in for a post. You sure as heck do NOT need to be paying fly shop prices for that. I buy feather dusters all the time for different things. Some have decent Ostrich Herl,..... others just have feathers dyed in a color(s) i like. Always keep your eyes open for materials in places you might not think of as a materials place. I paid 79 cents each for huge packages of tinsel the other day.....Christmas decorations, silver, gold, and red.
