Critter,
splitting the thread is a technic similar to a dubbing loop. Tie as usual and when it comes to dubbing, hackling or whatever you split the thread into 2 strands, place your materials in the gap between the 2 strands, twist it and wrap it to the hook. You need less thread compared to a dubbing loop. Less bulk on the hook.
