I may be doing it to many times and when I try to go closckwide stuff falls
out.
Don't think that makes a difference. Flat is flat. Just insert the stuff in the split thread and twist tight, real tight. I use flat thread to start with (Danville Flymaster or the new Gudebrod 6/0) but that is just to make life a little easier, not a prerequisite.
For spinning, do what Marc does also. Pull the thread tight between your left thumb and index (assuming a rightpaw), trapping the CDC and/or other stuff, and spin the bobbin with your right hand real tight, then while holding the bobbin so the spun thread is taut, release thumb and index so that the twist runs up the thread real quick; move most of the twist up by stroking the thread with thumb and index upwards. This will keep the materials much more secure than just letting the thread hang and spin under the weight of the bobbin only.

Rick, after you've been at it a while, it'll become very easy for you to
"see" when the thread is flat. It's very visably clear once you know what to
look for. Use light to help. Then after you wind a bit and it becomes
twisted again, just keep re-flatning, and wraping, re-flatning, you'll get
it in no time. mark....
