Lead-free solder is available. For sweating potable water pipes, non-lead solder has been required for more than ten years here in New York State-USA. I have used lead-free solder instead of bead heads.

I often use steel wire and then coat with nail polish. Rusting can still be a problem even with coating the flies. So when rust shows through --- you have to go back to the vise. I use twist ties that come with plastic bags as the source of wire. Strip the paper off and you are good to go.

Tinned wire lasts longer and is available by the spool.

Thanks for the recomendations - solder is out, and the toobies and Dinsamore splitshots sound good for on the leader, but is there anything that is lead-free for wrapping the hook prior to tying?
Thanks,
Pete

Another note on solder, Pete...

It's density is only marginally greater than copper ( about 7% more ). So it's
not a good substitute because it's only slightly heavier and then you have the
lead pollution factor back into the equation.
