Del,
Just a suggestion, but you might want to print up a
list of every fly, (and it's size), that's in that box, in small font, just
big enough so he can read it, laminate it, and place it inside the box...
That way he can get accustomed to identifying all the flys that he's
got... Sure makes things easier...

Subject: [VFB] Starter Fly Box
I have been
asked to create a starter flybox for an inspiring angler. My friends son wants
to get started into Fly Fishing. He just got a rod and
reel setup and 2 fly boxes for Christmas and now needs some "go to" flies in
the boxes. Here is what I got for him a starter
assortment: Dries Black
Gnats Adams Lt.
Cahills Wulffs (White, Royal,
Adams) Stimulators (Yellow, Olive,
Orange) Humpies (Red, Green,
Yellow) EHCs (Tan, Black, Brown,
Olive) Nymphs G.R.H.Es (Black, Natural,
Olive) Pheasant Tails (Natural, Black,
Olive) Soft Hackles (Orange, Green,
Red) Streamers Wooly
Buggers(Black, Olive,
Rust) Terestrials Foam Hoppers(
Green, Tan, Yellow) Foam Beetles (Black,
Green) Ants, Flying and Spent (Black, Red/Cinn)
I think that this will be a
good starter set for him, as most of these flies are time proven and catch
fish here and in the nearby mountains. I have also thrown in a few patterns
that have proven themselves that I tie, such as my Fluro Green Bead Body Soft
Hackle and my One Hackle. I have them all packaged up and plan to give them to
him in a few weeks, since his birthday is next month.
What would you all sugest to add, if anything? He will be fishing lakes and
ponds for 'gills, and streams for
trout.
