Koznyshev, Levin's half-brother, was a famed intellectual and writer whose thinking Levin had difficulty following. Koznyshev embodies cold intellectualism and is unable to embrace the fullness of life, as we see when he cannot bring himself to propose to Varenka.

I'd say the old bird for sure knew what life was about.  Levin had it all wrong.  Although an intellectual, Sergei could stop and enjoy the pleasures of fly fishing. That was probably why he never proposed to Varenka, although he almost did once, but their mushroom hunt turned into nothing except a conversation about mushrooms.  The moment passed and both knew it wouldn't come again.
