About the popper head slipping...
This may sound silly, but it has worked for my poppers... instead of nylon
thread, use the super-cheap cotton (I think) thread that you get at the dollar
stores or in sewing kits. This soaks up the epoxy well, so that when you put
the wood/ cork over it, the thread gets compressed just to the slit in the
cork, thus pressing out a tad of the epoxy, and making a very tight fit once
the epoxy dries. just what I've done. Also, test that the epoxy hardens
completely - you may need to mix it differently or get a new batch. Just a
thought...

Yes, I always do that, whether it is a popper or not, and the thread was slipping a little as well, as the fibers in the nylon would stretch or move out of their initial positions and wiggle back and forth or side to side, making the entire body wobble and remain out of balance. I drop of epoxy at either ends always helped, but only tremporariy.
In this version, with the roughened-shank, I'd just put the cork body right onto the shank, without any thread in the way.

I sometimes have trouble with cork-body surface flies as they slip around the hook shank and just don't stay where their supposed to. I was thinking if I rubbed the hook shank with some emory paper before I glued the cork halves together, the epoxy would form a stronger bond between the roughened hook shank and the cork body and prevent further slippage.
