Deb, I love my Dyna-King, too, especially since I bought new jaws and a set of midge jaws. The big jaws do a great job of holding just about anything up to a 10/0. I like the jaws on my Regals, too, but they won't open up to hold more than a 3/0 or so.
I have had one or two stainless steel hooks snap in the Dyna-King groove when I clamped the jaws down. Stainless is brittle and when the groove contour in the jaw doesn't match the hook bend, something's got to give. There are two hook grooves in my D-K jaws, so smaller hooks don't have to be buried deep in the jaws. I did wear one set of D-K jaws out, though, but it took about 5 years of heavy saltwater tying to do it. I do know that from owning other vises in the past, that putting the hooks too close to the edge is the best way to chip or bend the vise jaws. That could hurt. :) Do you wear safety goggles when tying?! -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of William Andreas Sent: Wednesday, January 19, 2005 12:19 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]@troutnet.com Subject: RE: [VFB] Chipped Jaws... I extended the lever on my renzentti to allow me to tighten it more. I have had not chipping but rounding of the edges of the jaws, which causes flies to 'pop' out at times, particularly if I take a small bite of the shank or i try to pad the shank like with salmon fly hooks. -----Original Message----- From: Deborah Duran [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wed 1/19/2005 6:50 AM To: [email protected] Cc: Subject: RE: [VFB] Chipped Jaws... I haven't had that problem with my Renzetti but you just hit on the reason why I don't use it very much anymore. I didn't like how much I had to tighten the jaws to get it to hold the hooks. They kept moving when I would tighten down my wraps. I have heard of the jaws chipping so I just use my Dyna King now for everything except small trout flies and now I use the tube fly head on the Renzetti base. That one of the things Renzetti did very well. You only have to buy the head of the vise to change it to a tube fly vise. I wish Dyna King would've done that so I wouldn't have to buy more vises. I was wondering if anyone else has had any problems with the jaws on a Renzetti chipping??? Most of the flys I tye are in the size range of a #20 to a #26 and the other day I noticed that the jaws on my "Renzetti Travler" were chipped... Now I do tighten the jaws down pretty good because I hate it when I'm trying to make some "tight" wraps and the hook turns in the vise... Thanks for your comments in advance... Rodney...
