Jeff,
I sharpen them whenever they don't cut well. I can tell, especially with
leather. I have a ceramic plunger from a glycol pump, about an inch dia.
and about 10" long, and all I have to do is drag the blades over it 3 times
each, and I'm done. A little 3-in-1 does the trick, too. It works on large
scissors and tiny ones. You must get the angle right, though, and I find it
works best if I pull the blade towards me with the inside of the blade
facing me. I keep the blades angled slightly away from me (feel for the
'bite' or use a gage). I can get them sharp enough to slice me open if I'm
not careful, because I have. Some of my mice have my DNA in them, so I
guess I'm really their daddy after all. LOL.

Another hint. I have some older scissors that I made serrated by sharpening
them real well, and then dragging them very hard one time over a large metal
file. This works great for trimming deer hair and McFlyfoam Yarn.
