My father was a large-animal veterinarian. He spent a lot of time in barns in the winter, washing his hands in cold water, etc. He had a severe problem with skin cracking. WHen they cracked, he'd get out the bag balm. He swore by it. ANd yes, it's still available:

A friend was in the auto glass business and as you can guess his hands took quite a beating from all the solvents, sealants and glass slivers. He swore by a product called "Bag Balm" (?spelling). It is used by dairy farmers to treat the cows for soreness caused by the milking machines. Never had cause to use it myself but he said that it worked like a charm. Just a possible alternate for anyone who doesn't have a nearby Emu to tap.

he said he had a suggestion. They gave me some "Emu Oil" to rub into it.
This has worked where all other skin and
hand lotions have failed.
