Gary,
These are good blanks, I like the action of some of the older St. Croix blanks. I don't care for the action on some of the newer blanks, but the blanks are well made. They also have a real good replacement Warrantee. A rod I made for a client has had the tip broken three times. St. Croix replaced three tip sections over a period of time at no cost to the owner. They even sent a shipping tube to send the butt section back to them so they could fit the tip section to the butt section. That is service.
The tips were not broken while fishing, poor handling while transporting.
Before I got with the local rodmaker, the St. Croix is the blank I would use in my rod building classes.
What bothered me is, I had ordered a half dozen St. Croix blanks for a class to be dropped shipped from the factory. When they got here, they came from a known rod company in the N.W. and not from Wisconsin. I inquired about this from a St., Croix rep at a show I was tying at. I will not post here what I was told. It goes back to what I said before, only a few places make all the blanks. St. Croix does make blanks, I will leave it at that.

Park Falls, Wi. is another small town (only 3000 or so). But St. Croix rods or blanks aren't as inexpensive as they once were.

Allan,
I worked for Scott Fly Rods for a while and every few months we would get results back from one test or another. Consistently St. Croix came back in the top three against the biggies (i.e. Sage, Orvis, Scott, Thomas and Thomas, etc.). These test were performed with rods only labeled with a number. They were judged on distance accuracy and over-all rod feel. I love my Scott's, but for the money...

Who makes the best blanks?
Now THAT opens a big can of worms.
There are many who swear by the big-name brands. There are many who swear by the no-name brands. And, of course, there are many who just swear.
