Why do I tie flys several reasons, as a kid I could go out trout fishing with my bait and sheet metal and usually catch my linit the first day or two, but catching trout with bait or sheet metal ment almost sure death for the fish. Then by chance one of my neighbors Slim asked me if I fished, I replyed sure do I got my limit the first day.I then asked him if he fished and informed me that he did in deed, I asked him how he did and he informed me he cought 53 trout the first day. Not knowing about catch and release at the age of 7 I informed him that he could get in big trouble catching that many trout, it was then that I found out he didn't kill any trout but just fished for the fun of it. He continued to tell me that he uses flys and it didn't kill the trout. My next question was a really dumb one I asked him how he cought so many flys for bait, but Slim was very understanding and started to tell me about flys and how to tie them, he asked me if I had a
couple a minutes, I said sure and he took me into his shop and showed me how it was done. After he gave me a quick lesson he said he had some work to do but asked me if I wanted to tie one while he did his work. 20 minutes later he inspected my fly and asked if I was going to stick with it, with the thought of catching fish on something I created myself from nothing more than silk, wool, and feathers was to much I was hooked, he pulled out his pocket knife and started to cut some materials to get me started. Over the years I've met other fly tyers who helped me learn new and more tricks of the trade. So here I am looking back over more years than I care to remember still learning more tricks of the trade. Even if I had to quit fishing I would still tie flys just for the enjoyment of creating something old or something new. So keep tying and keep fishing. Ed

your opinions of why you tye, and why that is..........i propose that to tye
flies simply to catch fish is as mundane as it is to go fishing simply to
catch fish. It is a fact that tying flies that "Work" is a worthwhile
pursuit. But is that all there is to it? Quite not.........as you fish to
find solitude, peace, the comfort of nature.......a better understanding of
one's self......to test your patiance.......your cunning.......your
dilagence.......your stealth...........your anciant ability as a
hunter.........and so many other things........so should you tye for an
