Iain, Is this for a one fly contest or just a general question?
For solely survival purposes, it would be a pheasant tail. And yes if it was a survival situation, I still would not use bait. For a one fly contest I would definitely go Adams or similar dry, unless I knew a specific hatch obviously. Going subsurface in a contest is too dicey for losing the fly. Lane
