Wes and Joyce and all

There are at least two different foams used in PFD'S (Personal Flotation Devices AKA life preservers).

Some are sheets are of ethafoam like material. Another type has better memory and flex and are used in the type often worn for kayaking and water skiing. I think you mean the latter? Somewhere in my basement I have a some of each. Contact me off list if you would like some. I am trying to reduce my inventory a little bit here.

I tied a large streamer (ok Dono 1/0 may not be large for you) out of styrofoam cups last year. I cut the foam into strips and put one strip on top of another until I had an unsinkable streamer. I put lots of flash on the bottom. Except for its light weight it resembled a top water plug used by bass fisherman when I was done. I did land a nice largemouth on it this past summer. It was difficult to get any distance with my casts however. Effective from a canoe however.

Do not use head cement on styrofoam. It sizzles and gives off toxic gasses.

I also tie a fly with a McDonald's coffee cup. I use part of the colored logo as part of the fly's design.
Funky and it works!!!

Ian Moulter, in his book on flies, uses a piece of styrofoam cup under each of his floating flies..He cuts a thin piece, pushes the side of the bodkin in it making a compressed thin line, then cuts that piece of foam to a small body shape, lines up the compressed line with the hook, and binds it to the hook. Try it..it works like a charm and is available with every soft drink you get from your favorite drink place. Joyce
