Personally, I love using a double uni knot for all my line to leader,
leader to leader, and backing to line connections. Works easily,
dependably. Haven't had a knot failure in years. Started out on the
Dark Side tying blood knots until a flyfishing Jedi showed me the true
way. Note: the Borger video on the "nailless nail knot" is actually a
uni knot.
One of the advantages of the uni knot, also named the Duncan loop, is
that you can create a slip knot loop. I use the loop to trap poly yarn
for an effective strike indicator, and also to create a loop connection
to the fly allow free movement of the fly at the terminal end.
The uni knot is also disgustingly dependable for all the situations
Eddie describes below. No problem to join different materials or very
different diameter tippets.
Other folks swear by surgeon's knots, the pitzen, and the Orvis.
The links above will give you a lot to try.

Instead of a Blood knot, try a uni-to-uni knot. It's basically a
cinch(or clinch depending on your locality) tied to another cinch(or
again, clinch). I use this knot to tie Mono to Braid, Mono to Floro,
Braid to Floro, and just about anything else when I join lines, except
fly line to leader, which I use a Nail knot to a piece of heavy line
and then tie a Perfection Loop, making loop to loop connections a
breeze.
Hope this helps some. I wouldnt bother with a tool. Like others have
said, its just another piece of equipment to get in the way. It's
also something you'll grow accustomed too, which isnt that great. In
an emergency, I can tie a nail knot without a nail. it's a pain but
it can be done.
