The Widowmaker is a streamer fly originated by Bob Johns when he ran a
fly shop in Ventura, CA. It was distributed by Orvis for a year or
two. It was a sculpin imitaion tied with wool, rabbit strip, a mystery
hair that he used for the pectoral fins, braided mylar tubing for the
body, on a Partridge hook called the BJCX "Class Ten," which was a
XX-Heavyweight Streamer Hook, with a straight tapered loop eye 6-XL.
This was a hook specially made by Partridge for Bob. It is a difficult
fly to tie, and to watch him apply and trim the wool was a real treat.
By layering different colors of wool for the top, bottom and eyes,
then trimming to shape a great looking fly was formed. The end result
is a really spectacular fly. He used to say to fish the fly, the first
thing you had to do was find a really sturdy tree, then hang on to it
as you fished the fly. Hope this helps--Gerry
