Alan.. I see, thanks.. That same is true with all rods I guess, went from Fiberglass to graphite etc... and the mono got better and more durable too... I'llcheck out that book you mention... Thanks, Chuck   The books I checked out are "An Introduction to Fly tying" by Peter Cockwill, copywrite 1990, which would have been a GREAT book, but the library's copy I checked out has two sets of pages 33-48, ans is missing the pages 49-64 cause of a binding error LOL.. One is "Commonsense Flyfishing by Ray Ovington , copywrite 1983, and one is a general freshwater fishing book called " Freshwater Fishing Tips and Techneques" by Gene Kugach copywrite 1997 (so they are not as old as I thought they were... but I'm going to join the Library in the next Biggest town (Anniston AL) next week, and they have 100 times as many books as the library I got these from...   ----- Original Message ----- From: Allan Fish To: vfb@troutnet.com Sent: Friday, June 24, 2005 9:27 PM Subject: Re: [VFB] My Tom Nixon book arrived!! This brings up a question I have had since I checked out some library books Tuesday, but haven't gotten to read them yet.. Three of the books are circa 1970's... Is Flyfishing, type flies, rods, lines, leader and/or tippet material.. etc stayed the same enough for these books to be good for a newbie like myself??? That's a loaded question.  Without knowing the books, it is hard to answer that.  In general, flyfishing hasn't changed that much - the techniques, the terminology, etc.  But where the fiberglass rod was the 'thing' in the 70's, people have either gone to graphite (the majority) or gone back to bamboo (the rich guys)*. The lines have changed - they're much slicker now and don't require the tedious care the old lines used to need. Flies have not changed.......but there a ton of flies used now that were not available in the 70's.  And there's also a ton of tying materials that weren't available in the 70's. On the other hand, there are some books written in the 70's that are classics and haven't been 'surpassed' by new books.  Joe Bates' "STREAMERS AND BUCKTAILS" comes to mind.
