I have some tippet that is quite old and have no problem with it (horsing 4-5lb fish on 6-7x sort of stories).  Thinking back, I seem to remember that UV rays to DEET has been discussed as having an affect on tippet. 

Major influence on nylon (polyamide) is UV light. Nylon stored in the dark, DRY, and at below ambient temperatures, may last quite a while. 

Hans (where is that man?) has stated his disdain for floro, claiming it takes forever to disintegrate. 

Well, yes, but the good thing is, it doesn't break down, so it doesn't produce toxic monomers or other breakdown products... Or as our soccer guru, Johan Cruyff, sez, every drawback has its advantage...
