Just Curious,
Does anyone else have crazy weather like Wyoming? I mean dangerously crazy
weather. I've been caught out fishing twice in weather that went from a
beautiful sunny summer day to hurricane-like winds, rain, hail, and
lightning in just a matter of a few minutes. Once I was caught out in my
boat- only thing that saved me is that it is a 21' deep-V cuddy and I was
able to keep it facing into the 100+mph winds and 10' waves (had 11 people
on board). Twenty minutes later it was a 'picture-postcard perfect'
beautiful summer afternoon again at a high mountain lake.
Last night we had a storm move in around 7:30 and it just wrecked Casper.
Power was out for a little all over town, and out at our place until after
we went to bed by candle-light at 11:00. Trees were downed and trucks were
blown off the interstate. Although we're in a drought, there was flooding
and road closures all over, and flash-flood warnings in the mountains.
Yeah, everybody has storms, but a half hour before ours last night, it was
warm, sunny, and just breezy. We're in the peak of tourist season here,
with people floating the N. PLatte and camping all over the place. It's
been a record-breaking heat-wave (consec. 100°+F days) just ending Sunday,
like everywhere else, but it's only 49°F today. Waiting to hear the
aftermath stories.
I called the local fly shop I deal with and all of their guides got off the
river early, but I don't know about others who don't know the river and our
weather. There will be an article in the Caser paper tomorrow about the
full effects of the storm.
My question to the list is this. In your area, or the area where you fish,
do you have weather-related hazards, particularly the life-threatening ones,
that you take special precautions for? What are they?
I'll start- Wyoming:
Weather-related:
Hail, lightning, cold-fronts(exposure), flash-flooding, high winds.
Just as a kicker- non-weather-related threats:
Dam tailwater releases, large animals (moose-bear), small animals
(rattlesnakes)
