Ed,
Please be more specific about fly 'wings'.  Which 'wings' are you speaking of?  Dry fly wings, wet fly wings (traditional), nymph wings, stonefly wings, salmonfly wings, streamer-fly wings, etc.
 
Each one of these would have its own specific substitute for feathers, be it synthetic yarns, foam sheets, tyvek, hair, vinyl, fur strips, etc.
 
My current favorite for zonkers and sculpins is chinchilla strips.
