Martin: Thanks.. i have been using Don's Rope dubbing technique, and have a LOT more success with it, than I did before doing it the "normal" way... Just that a New fly tier sees all these products all over the net, and wonders, "Do I need that??? Or is it a I WANT it type thing"??? I see what you are talking about, cause some things I do have a lot more problems getting the dubbing to stay wrapped around the thread than others.... Thanks again, Chuck

Chuck,
The wax in prewaxed thread bonds the individual fibres and prevents fraying of the thread. It also makes dubbing a little easier, but it is not nearly as sticky as dubbing wax. Dubbing wax can be useful, but it can also mat the material you dub, and many tiers don't use it or only use it with "difficult" dubbing material such as seal, where a good wax can come in handy. For dubbing without wax but with the possibility to create nice effects, check out DonO's rope dubbing thechnique on the Line's End site. If you want to know more about wax, the other day I saw a post by Glenn Overton. If he's *the* Overton I hope he'll chime in...
