Mike One more place I hesitated to mention because there won't be a lot for your wife to do but enjoy the scenery, eat good food and read a book... is up around Mount Cook. There were a lot of beautiful streams there but it is a little more rugged so I'd worry about hiking around it alone. I can't remember the place we stayed, if you want I could try to look it up but I'm sure there are a few wonderful resorts/hotels there. There just wasn't a lot of shopping where we were and the recreation was outdoor activities but it was beautiful and looked very "fishy". Check with Ian about that location also. Regards, Deb
