Joyce,
We always used a variety of colors but mostly orange, white, pink but always with fire orange thread it seemed. The cheaper the yarn the better the fishing and we used any style hook usually about 14-16 standard wet or dry. Orange yarn represented fresh salmon or steelhead eggs, pink was more of a trout egg or fading salmon and white was supposed to be sucker milt? over eggs or decaying eggs if I remember. Take a three-four strand yarn and pull off one strand and inchworm the loops with 3 wraps of thread in between.

KIndly let me know more about the variations of sucker spawn and what yarns you use to tie it. Joyce
